I have had an idea for a series of paintings—Handwork... . This is the first in the series; Handwork #1: Friendship. My granddaughter was making friendship bracelets, and I thought that would make an interesting painting. The Winter Art show came up, and I thought I would give it a go. I always see improvements, but for one who paints so rarely, I thought it turned out quite well.

Recognition: Won fourth place (of 70 exhibits) in the Omaha Artists' Winter Art Show.

Artistic Statement

What I see is the culmination of all that I have seen. As a result, there is a filter that I place between the scene and the viewer—a painting. It becomes a unique interpretation of my observation, ability, and sensitivity to the person, place, or thing. In rendering an observation I am stricken that objects are most beautiful ephemerally at a specific moment in time.

While I paint many things, landscape is my passion. The beauty of nature and its infinite variety is compelling. As I paint, there is a time when I control the painting, but there comes a time in the process when the subject emerges from the recesses of the canvas and then the painting has needs and wants. As I become the instrument of unveiling it, my painting becomes my battle ground. The ecstasy of painting comes as I participate in the release of what has drawn me to the subject in the first place.

The result is always beautiful to me and perhaps has a charm for others.
